Case marking and alignment

چکیده
In (1) the syntactic functions of S (gizona ‘man’ in 1a) and O (mutila ‘boy’ in 1b) are identically coded, while in (2) it is S (muzhchina ‘man’ in 2a) and A (muzhchina in 2b) that are identically coded. That is, the two languages differ in whether S is aligned with A or O. Henceforth we refer to syntactic functions such as A, O, and S as argument roles. Argument structure has to do with the number of arguments and their roles; valence has to do with the morphosyntactic treatment of these roles, including their marking with particular cases. Alignment is the identical vs. distinct coding or treatment or behavior of argument roles that are different at some other level or in some other part of the grammar. Put differently, alignment is neutralization of valence-specific argument roles in particular morphological or syntactic contexts. Alignment, from our perspective, holds between sets (usually pairs, sometimes triads) of argument roles that

Bidirectional case-marking and linear adjacency
Bidirectional case markers in West African languages, including those of the Songhay family, are morphemes inserted between subject and object NPs that would otherwise be adjacent. They therefore specify both that the NP to the left is a subject, and that the NP to the right is an object, and they cannot be bracketed uniquely with either. This is shown by the fact that these morphemes are absen...
متن کاملAlignment and Word Order in Old Japanese Alignment and Word Order in Old Japanese Keywords Active Alignment @bullet Ergative Alignment @bullet Split Intransitivity @bullet Case @bullet Nominalization @bullet Verbal Prefixes @bullet Clitic Pronouns @bullet Nominal Hierarchy
This paper argues that Old Japanese (eighth century) had split alignment, with nominative-accusative alignment in main clauses and active alignment in nominalized clauses. The main arguments for active alignment in nominalized clause come from ga-marking of active subjects and the distribution oftwo verbal prefixes: /-for active predicates and safor inactive predicates (cf. Yanagida, In: Hasega...
متن کاملEvaluation of Tree Marking in Persian Ironwood-hornbeam Stands at Bahramnia Forestry Plan and Its Effect on Stand Structure
Tree marking can cause changes in forest. This study aimed to assess tree marking operation and to predict its effect on stand structure of Persian ironwood-hornbeam stands at Bahramnia forestry plan, north of Iran. Therefore 98 trees that were marked in compartment 9 of the mentioned forest in 2017 based on selection system and according to the recent laws of Forests, Range and Watershed Manag...

متن کاملComplex Case Phenomena in the Grammar Matrix
This paper describes a number of verbal argument marking patterns found in the world’s languages and provides HPSG analyses for them. In addition to commonly-occurring variations of morphosyntactic alignment (e.g. nominative-accusative, ergative-absolutive), this paper also presents analyses of more complex phenomena, including ergativity splits, Austronesianstyle focus-case systems, and direct...
